An illustration is a spotlight on a certain topic

The term caricature originates from Latin and means loaded or exaggerated. “Loaded” visual satire with people (personal individual caricature or portrait caricature), political evens (event caricature) or social situations (circumstance caricature) – exaggerated and drawn with humour characterize caricatures. Caricatures were already found in ancient times and such famous artists as for example Leonardo da Vinci or Carl Spitzweg created socially critical caricatures. Caricatures make interesting events out of heavy news and caricatures of people are often used as presents for different occasions. When satirical magazines and newspapers used them as a form of illustration in print media in the middle of the 19th century, the word cartoon – derived from the French word for strong paper – found its place as the term for these humorous satirical drawings . Whether caricaturist or cartoonist, the artistic of such works grasps content in eye-catching representations that are either uses as a means of customer loyalty by repetition in various issues or as means of fast message content for example on covers of magazines and books. Cartoons are often used as visual metaphors in advertising and marketing.

Illustrations were once called illuminations. They throw light on text content. Today they are still illuminating themes. They are the visual representations of something that is described in a text. Illustrations can be created using the most different artistic techniques and do not only find use in print and internet media or TV and videos, but also, for example, for video games and marketing materials.
